Pharmacy First

Under the NHS Pharmacy First service we can give you advice on a range of conditions and we may also be able to offer treatment and dispense prescription medicine (where clinically appropriate) - all without the need to see a GP.

Listed below are the conditions currently included in the Pharmacy First service.
Ear Infection
If your child has pain in the ear, they may have an infection (Otitis Media). Bring them into our pharmacy to see our Pharmacist or book an appointment. This service is for children aged one year to seventeen years.
Impetigo
Impetigo is a skin infection that's very contagious but not usually serious. It often gets better in 7 to 10 days if you get treatment. Anyone can get it, but it's very common in young children. Why not use our pharmacy first service within our pharmacy to quickly help with Impetigo.
Insect Bite
Patients aged one year and over who have an infected insect bite can receive support from the Pharmacist and team. If you have been bitten and the bite area is red, itchy, tender or swollen, visit our pharmacy today.
Shingles
Shingles is a viral infection that manifests as a painful rash, affecting people of all ages but more commonly seen in the elderly. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox and can leave lasting nerve pain. Early treatment is key to managing this uncomfortable condition. This service is available to patients aged 18 and above.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis is the painful swelling of the sinus cavities, commonly triggered by an infection. Although a common ailment, it typically resolves within a month. However, if symptoms persist, medication can aid in a speedier recovery. Don't suffer in silence, seek treatment to help alleviate sinus discomfort.
Sore Throat
Sore throats are a frequent occurrence, but usually not a cause for concern. With time, they typically resolve on their own, lasting no longer than a week. So, there's no need to fret when the discomfort hits. Our pharmacy first service can help you to speedily recover.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are much more common in females than males. They are caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. The infection is usually easily cured with a simple course of anitbiotics which the pharmacist is able to prescribe under the Pharmacy First service. This service is available to female patients aged between 16 and 64.

About the NHS Pharmacy First Service

The Pharmacy First service was introduced by the NHS in 2025 to enable patients to be seen by trained pharmacists for a range of conditions without the neeed to see a GP first.
The service means eligible patients can receive support, advice and, if clinically appropriate, medication. Whilst the service itself is free, prescription charges will still apply to those patients without a valid exemption.
How can Pharmacy First save time?
Pharmacy First will help you get seen by a healthcare professional quickly.

Instead of waiting for a GP appointment, going to A&E or attending out-of-hours NHS services, you can walk into your nearest Pharmacy and have a private consultation with one of our pharmacists during our opening hours.
What are the benefits of Pharmacy First?
Pharmacy First will allow you to self-treat minor ailments and reduce the time you spend at your GP surgery.

Pharmacists have a range of clinical skills, and they will be able to provide accurate clinical advice without the hassle and waiting times that you might experience using other NHS services such as A&E.

If the pharmacist determines that you need further treatment from a GP, our pharmacist will make the referral for you.
Who is eligible for Pharmacy First?
Only patients in England will be eligible for the Pharmacy First service and each illness included in the service has its own restrictions on the age of patients eligible to be treated under it.
Will I need to prove that I don't have to pay for my prescriptions?
If you are exempt from paying for prescriptions, you should show your pharmacists evidence of this when you speak to them. They will need it if they recommend any medicines to treat your symptoms.
What will the pharmacist ask during my consultation?
Our pharmacist will want to understand:
  • The symptoms you're experiencing
  • Your medical history
  • If you're experiencing any other types of illness.
This will help them recommend clinically appropriate treatments and medicines that should work for you.
